The Artificial Intelligence Unit builds practical AI and automation capability for every Wing across the California Air National Guard — turning everyday friction into solved problems.
The AIU stood up as a new unit with a direct mandate: apply artificial intelligence and automation where it actually helps Airmen do their jobs. Not theory — working tools, faster processes, and better decisions across the California Air National Guard.
Every deliverable starts with a real problem from the field, gets built by Airmen who understand both the mission and the technology, and gets handed back to the Wings that need it.
The AIU supports every geographically separated Wing across California. Hover a point to see who.
Five geographically separated Wings, one coordinated unit — the LNO Wing Support Lead role keeps every one of them connected to the AIU roadmap.
Every AIU position is an additional duty — Airmen contribute alongside their primary AFSC. Seven cells do the work, connected to the force through dedicated leadership roles.

Per the charter's near-term objectives, the cadre's first proof-of-concept project — a Box Sign tracking dashboard for the CA ANG's enterprise Box tenant — is built and working. The team is now closing the last gap: getting it running on the government network.
Documents sent out for signature in Box Sign disappeared into a black hole — no way to see what was still pending, who was sitting on it, or where the holdup actually was.
The Application Cell built a real-time tracking dashboard that pulls every in-flight Box Sign document into one view — flagging urgent and overdue items, tagging by priority, and surfacing exactly where each document is stuck in the signature chain.
The dashboard works end-to-end. What's left is standing it up on the government network — the last step before it's fully operational and leadership gets that transparency tenant-wide.
Built by the Application Cell — the AIU's first proof-of-concept deliverable per the charter's near-term objectives. Not yet fully operational.
